As the center piece of the largest recreation complex in the Greater Hamilton Area, The Mohawk 4 Ice Centre is the place to play for over 1.5 million visitors every year. The year-round facility boasts 4 NHL sized ice surfaces, a full-service restaurant, concession, sports retail outlet and multi-purpose community room. Nustadia Recreation Inc. (NRI) partnered with the City of Hamilton and the ice users of the community to develop and operate this recreational four-pad arena. NRI acted as the development managers and operators for the facility, which was constructed in 11 months, on time, and on budget. This facility, based on a capital contribution of only $5 M, was developed and operated with no impact to the tax base of the host community. The building generates a modest annual profit (approximately $100K to $200K) after all operating costs, with a capital reserve fund of over $1 million in a trust account, and after servicing $11 M in debt annually.
Given the success of this project and our level in this particular community, the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board hired NRI to manage, operate, and program all its high school outdoor artificial turf fields – currently five fields. This particular management function is provided by the NRI management staff of the Mohawk 4 Ice Centre.
Completed on time and under budget in 2005, The Mohawk 4 Ice Centre continues to earn praise for its efficient operation, friendly staff and commitment to the community. To date, The Mohawk 4 Ice Centre continues to donate to the Hamilton Minor Hockey Council with the proceeds from its annual charity golf tournament, with over $200,000 raised for underprivileged children to enjoy ice sports in Hamilton.
